One of the highest ROI things I’ve done was learn to type fast. And if you’re seeing this, you probably also spend most of your working time at a computer. Thus, increasing your input bandwidth is really helpful.

It may surprise you that the average typing speed is 40 WPM.

I had always considered myself a decently fast typer—I was around 80 WPM but this was without any training or technique whatsoever. I would hit keys at random with different fingers and even have to look at my keyboard sometimes.

I now consistently average around 130 WPM and my pitch to you is that with a little training, you can probably also increase your typing speed by at least 30-40%.

The main technique you want to learn is touch typing, which is just the idea of typing without looking at your fingers and using all of your fingers.

If your average typing speed <150 WPM, just spam typingclub.com for a few weeks and you should be good. After that—well I’m not there yet, and maybe we won’t really need it considering the way dictation and neural interfaces are going.

I know of people who swear by typing only with their index fingers and it is surprisingly fast. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen it above 120 WPM. You’re eventually bottlenecked by human anatomy. Using 20% of your fingers just doesn’t make sense.

Think about the distance your 2 index fingers have to travel to reach every key compared to the range that 5 whole digits cover.

I know there exist even faster keyboards like Dvorak, but practically the universality of QWERTY is good enough for me. Maybe one day.
